Although primary school is compulsory, many children are unable to attend because their families cannot afford supplies, uniforms or fees. Only 59 percent of children reach the fifth grade.
Poor families live in houses composed largely of concrete block. Homes typically lack basic services, such as plumbing and electricity.
Cultural Information : Work Hard . . . Play Hard. This motto - known as the rumbero spirit - is especially evident in the people of Colombia. And play they do. Pick any month of the year and a Colombian festival of some kind is likely. Since the 1960's, the government has sponsored a number of regional celebrations. Many of these events are designed to preserve and honor Colombian music and traditions.
