This outgoing, welcoming spirit is pervasive throughout the Dominican Republic. Children are rarely shy. Almost every home in the country has one or more mesadoras (rocking chairs) for people to sit and visit.
When meeting for the first time, Dominicans offer a traditional handshake. However, if the hand is dirty, they will offer a wrist or elbow for shaking.
