Although primary school is compulsory, many children are unable to attend because their families cannot afford required supplies and uniforms. There is also a severe shortage of schools, especially in rural areas.
Respiratory tract infections, malnutrition, parasitic infections and gastrointestinal disease, especially diarrhea, represent common health threats.

In Ecuador, relationships with family and friends are most important. Unannounced visitors are not only welcome, but encouraged. When socializing, Ecuadorians place all their furniture near the walls so everyone, including children, can dance freely. And when visitors leave, they frequently receive a small gift - regalito - such as candy or fruit.
