Key poverty-related issues : Poor families often live in homes made of mud, adobe brick or wood. Typically, houses have dirt floors with one room to serve as the sleeping, eating and living area. In urban slums, overcrowding is an additional problem.
There is a severe shortage of schools, especially in rural areas. Many poor families cannot afford necessary supplies, uniforms or fees. Only 25 percent of children are enrolled in secondary school. Only 56 percent of adults are literate.
Respiratory tract infections, parasitic infections, malnutrition and acute diarrhea represent common health threats.
Cultural Information : Guatemalans are known to be warm and polite. Generally, they dislike making others feel uncomfortable and commonly say the phrase, "No tenga pena" meaning "don't worry" - to put others at ease. When meeting for the first time, residents offer a firm handshake and say "Mucho Gusto!" which means "pleased to meet you."
Western-style clothing is very prevalent in Guatemala. However, in more rural areas, women may wear a huipil (blouse) that has a special design indicating her status and hometown.
