Key poverty-related issues : In November 1998, Hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras, leaving over 5,700 people dead and over 12,000 injured.
Less than half the children enrolled in primary school will graduate to secondary school. No government preschool programs are provided. More than 40 percent of the population is illiterate.
Parasitic infections, skin diseases, acute diarrhea and respiratory tract infections represent common health threats.
Cultural Information : Clothing in Honduras is westernized. This is because much of the clothing is from America, often secondhand for poorer residents. Hondurans especially like wearing clothing with English slogans, even if they are uncertain of the meaning.
Not surprisingly, beans, corn and rice are common foods. Fruits, such as bananas and pineapples, are also eaten frequently. A favorite dish is tapado, a stew made of beef, vegetables and coconut milk.
Free time in Honduras is spent playing sports, especially soccer. Cards, dice games and dominos are also very popular.
Holidays are paramount to Honduran life. Many holidays coincide with United States' national holidays. Independence Day (September 15) is widely observed. Children practice for months to participate in parades and programs. An unofficial holiday, "The Day of the Child" is celebrated September 10. Children are given treats and gifts, and adults congratulate them on the street.
