Key poverty-related issues : With only one clinic serving 150,000 people in Kanyama, most children are rarely able to see a doctor or get medicine. This has had a devastating effect as diseases such as malaria, cholera, parasitic infections and tuberculosis take their toll.
Most families in the Kanyama compounds (communities) cannot afford adequate or nutritious food. In fact, children may go hungry for days because families can't buy food. Malnutrition is widespread, causing significant developmental issues.
In Kanyama, a dusty squatter settlement on the outskirts of Lusaka, as many as 75 percent of the children can't go to school do to the lack of classrooms. Access isn't the only challenge - most families can't afford supplies, tuition or uniforms.
Cultural Information : With so many ethnic groups comprising the population of Zambia, there are a wide variety of customs. Groups perform many native dances in celebration of significant events, often accompanied by rhythmic singing, drums, whistles and thumb pianos.
Nshima, a filling dish made from corn, oil and water, is served with nearly every meal. It is often rolled into a ball and dipped into sauces made with vegetables and meat, although many poorer families will eat the flavorless dish alone because it's all they can afford.
Since the majority of Zambians are Christians, families celebrate traditional Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter.
